The Shell Nigeria Delta Post graduate scholarship is an annual fully-funded scholarship that provides opportunity indigenes of selected Niger Delta states to study in the United Kingdom. The objective of this scholarship program is to provide postgraduate study opportunities in courses relevant to the oil and gas industry for qualified students from the Niger Delta States listed above. The Shell Nigeria Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme sponsors about 15 applicants yearly.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP


The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) is delighted to announce the Tenth annual NNPC/SPDC_JV Niger Delta Postgraduate Scholarship for qualified applicants in selected Niger Delta States; Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers state. This scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship that provides the opportunity for these Nigerians to study in the United Kingdom.
The objective of this scholarship program is to provide postgraduate study opportunities in courses relevant to the oil and gas industry for qualified students from the Niger Delta States listed above.
In the nine years of running postgraduate scholarship for Niger Delta, 92 students have won the opportunity to study in a high-ranked university in the United Kingdom (UK) on a fully-funded scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

You are eligible if you

  • Are an indigene of one of the selected states in Nigeria; Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, and Rivers.
  • Hold a degree of an equivalent standard to a UK Upper Second Class Honours Degree (2.1)
  • Have completed NYSC by September 2020
  • Have an adequate standard of English ( at least 6.5 in IELTS) and meet the colleges’ language requirements
  • Never been offered admission to study on one of the Eligible Courses at the selected colleges
  • Plan to return to Nigeria at the end of the program
  • Have not already studied or currently studying in the UK or other developed country.
  • Be aged between 21-28 years by 30/09/2020.
  • Currently resides in Nigeria
  • Have a Nigerian international passport valid till December 2020
  • Display intellectual ability and leadership potential

You are not eligible if you,

  • Are an employee, employees’ relative (or former employee who have left employment less than five years before) of SPDC, Royal Dutch SHELL Group of Companies, or the College.
  • Below the ages of 21 and above 28
  • Have studied in a developed country
  • Are not an indigene of the states listed above
  • Will not conclude NYSC before or by September 2020
  • Currently reside outside Nigeria

SCHOLARSHIP COVERS

The Shell Postgraduate Scholarship covers:

  • The full cost of tuition fees
  • One economy return-flight ticket from Nigeria to the UK
  • Contribution towards living expenses
  • Medical insurance in line with UK student visa requirements

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  • First, submit an application for admission to any of the participating universities for any of the qualifying courses and apply only after receiving an unconditional offer for study.
  • Application forms for the scholarship will ONLY be made available through the websites of the Imperial College London, the University of Leeds and the University of Aberdeen, following a formal offer of admission by the University.

SELECTION PROCESS

The universities will process applications and select candidates who will attend interviews with SPDC before being considered for final selection.

NOTICE

  • Scholarship applications will not be considered until the applicant has been accepted by the University to undertake an eligible program of postgraduate study
  • Please note that the stipends (living expenses) are based on the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) published living rates and are limited to this only.
  • This scholarship is a non-committal scholarship. Note that NEITHER SPDC NOR any Shell company is obligated to offer employment of any sort to any candidate upon graduation, neither are successful candidates bonded to SPDC for any period on account of the scholarship award.

  • Demonstrated potentials that embody principles of reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Must have assumed leadership and made an impact in campus or community
  • Must be willing to participate in all residential workshops and regional pods, this is mandatory. Although, the mentorship sessions are optional.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a fully-funded program that provide opportunities for researchers in African Universities to conduct their doctoral research in the US while developing their potentials. The US Department of State funds this program.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is designed primarily to strengthen the capacities of African universities through higher degree training and to develop the potential of their academic staff. It is open to young and up-and-coming faculty members who wish to conduct their doctoral research in the United States.
From its inception, the Fulbright Program has fostered bilateral relationships in which citizens and governments of other countries work with the US to set joint priorities and shape the program to meet shared needs. The world has been transformed in ensuing decades, but the fundamental principle of international partnership remains at the core of the Fulbright mission.
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a research program funded by the US Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of participating countries, or permanent residents holding a valid passport issued by the government of the participating countries.
  • Applicants must be DOCTORAL OR Ph.D. students who have completed a significant amount of their doctoral program in universities in their home country and have the endorsement of their home institution.
  • Note: MASTERS and First-Degree applicants are NOT qualified to apply for this program.
  • Applicants must have an outstanding academic record and a high level of English proficiency.
  • Applicants must take their first TOEFL exam by May 2020.
  • Applicants must meet the minimum score on required standardized tests (TOEFL: a score of 90)
  • Applicants must have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program as scheduled and to returning home.
  • Only applicants with persuasive proposals, outlining their research objectives, methodology, time-frame, and justification for researching in the US will be short-listed for interviews.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not studied in the US.
  • Those in business, law, and accounting should understand that most US institutions rarely accept research students in these fields due to the high demand for full-time programs and tuition concerns. Therefore, we face enormous challenges in finding placements for such grantees unless their proposals are tilted toward economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution.

  • Citizens (or those who hold refugee status) in a Commonwealth country are welcome to apply.
  • Apply for a QECS award in a country other than their home country/country of citizenship.
  •  Have already completed your degree and have graduated with an equivalent of a 2:1 at the time of application

SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection committee assesses applications using four key criteria:

  • Academic history/references
  • Plan of Study
  • Development Impact and Post Study Outreach
  • Creating Networks

For an application to be considered for selection, applicants must ensure that:

  • Their personal statement is written clearly so that a non-specialist can understand what the aims of the research are and how they will be implemented
  • They clearly outline why they are applying to the courses and institutions listed on their application form. You must tailor these answers to each institution – if you write the same answer for each course/institution or copy and paste text from university websites, then your application will not be considered.
  • They meet all the eligibility requirements for their chosen university course, including having the necessary work experience
  • Two referees are identified and references are provided– references should be detailed and include the content outlined on the application form
  • Include full details about marks/grades gained for particular degrees. Applicants are strongly encouraged to ensure that full supporting documentation is provided at the time of application, in the form of an official transcript.
