SCHOLARSHIPS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Type: Undergraduate

Posted by:

Studying abroad to attain greater academic height is the dream of a large number of people. However, this often remains a dream as the cost of funding an international study is quite enormous. Some institutions have realized this and therefore offer scholarships, ranging from full-tuition scholarship, 50% and 25% tuition fee discounts. Some of these scholarships do not require a separate application, as applicants are automatically considered based on certain criteria placed by the sponsors while others may require thorough application.

However the case may be, your personal statement, motivation letters and previous academic records are what you’d most likely be judged with. Dedicate ample time to writing your essays and letters, ask someone to help you read through, ensure it aligns with the goal of the sponsor and your dreams might just become realities.

In order to contribute to your search for good funding opportunity, I made you a list of some of the scholarships for international students.

Although, this article does not exhaust the list, you can find other great funding opportunities from previous articles on the website.

NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY Ph.D. RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH

Babies born prematurely (<32 weeks gestation) are functionally immature, especially in terms of gastrointestinal and immunological activity and at increased risks of severe disease. Over 30% of preterm infants develop necrotizing enterocolitis (inflammatory mediated bowel condition) and/or late-onset sepsis (bacteria translocating into the bloodstream). Together, these diseases account for more deaths per year then all of the childhood cancer combined, with survivors suffering significant long-term morbidity, including poor growth and cognitive outcomes. This Ph.D. studentship aims to reduce disease in preterm infants by combining discovering and translational research. The student will generate and analyze multi-omics data from the Great North Neonatal Biobank, which contains >100,000 samples from more than 1000 preterm infants. Associations will be further integrated to determine causality and investigate potential mechanisms using a novel human preterm epithelial co-culture model.
The student will become an important part of a diverse and enthusiastic team. Complete interdisciplinary training will be provided in a range of wet-lab (e.g., microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, tissue culture) and bioinformatic/analytical skills. After the project, the student will have made an important contribution to the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutics for the detection and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis and late-onset sepsis in preterm infants.

If chosen for a JJWBGSP scholarship, the applicant will be unable to transfer the scholarship to another master degree program.

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTING THE WORLD BANK GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The JJWBGSP uses the following process to review eligible scholarship applications from developing country nationals, to identify the candidates with the highest potential, after completion of their graduate studies, to impact the development of their countries.

Two qualified assessors independently review each eligible application and score the application on a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account four main factors and the degree of cohesion among them:

  • Quality of Professional Experience (30% weight)
  • Quality of Professional Recommendations (30% weight)
  • Quality of Commitment to your Home Country (30% weight)
  • Quality of Education Background (10% weight)

The JJWBGSP Secretariat uses the average score of the two assessors and the following criteria to select the finalists:

  • Maintaining a reasonably wide geographical distribution of awards
  • Maintaining a reasonable distribution of awards across gender
  • Unusual circumstances/hardships, when assessing the employment experience and other aspects of an application;
  • Giving scholarships to those applicants who, other things being equal, have limited access to financial resources for graduate studies abroad.

The JJWBGSP Secretariat presents the finalists for the preferred program scholarship to the Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Steering Committee (composed of members of the World Bank Board of Directors and World Bank management) for approval. The finalists for partnership scholarship are presented for approval on a rolling basis throughout the year, matching the JJWBGSP Partner university’s admission cycle. In all cases, winners are notified soon after the JJWBG Steering Committee approval.

Commissions and Embassies review applications submitted for the Humphrey Fellowship Program, invite selected applicants for interviews, and determine which applications are to proceed for further consideration to the Institute of International Education in Washington, D.C. Please contact the Embassy or Commission in your country to learn of its selection criteria.

Embassies and Commissions must submit their nominations to the Institute of International Education (IIE) office in Washington, DC, by October 1. The deadline for applicants to submit their applications to the Embassy or Commission varies by country. Please check with the Embassy or Fulbright Commission in your country to learn of its application deadline.

IIE reviews all submitted applications for basic eligibility and then convenes regional Candidate Review Committees (CRC) to evaluate the applications.

Candidate Review Committees convene in Washington, DC, in December. Independent expert panelists with regional experience who work in academia, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations are recruited to review applications from a particular region of the world.

Stage 4: Approval by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board
The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) was created by Congress to supervise the Fulbright Program and other Fulbright exchange activities, including the Humphrey Fellowship Program. The FSB sets policies and procedures for the administration of the Humphrey Fellowship Program, has final authority for selection of all Fellows, and supervises the conduct of the Program both in the United States and abroad.

Stage 5: Placement of Selected Humphrey Fellows
After receiving approval from the FSB, the Department of State will announce the final selection results to participating U.S. Embassies and Binational Fulbright Commissions, who will inform candidates of their status.
